In the early morning hours of Oct. 20, 2022, God sent an angel to escort Elvin home after a lengthy illness. Elvin Harris, Jr. was born in Baltimore, MD at Provident Hospital on Dec. 31, 1956, to the late Elvin Harris, Sr and Evelyn Harris. Elvin was affectionately known as "Elvie," the 4th of the "Harris 6." He is preceded in death by his sister Deborah A. Tyler, brother Errol S. Harris and brother Mark X. Harris.
At birth Elvie was Christened and Confirmed at his family's Church, St. Katherine of Alexandria Episcopal Church where he attended Sunday school and served as an Acolyte.
Elvie received his formal education in the Baltimore City Public School system. Elvie attended Edmondson Senior High, where he was a star cross country runner, he assisted in taking his team to the divisional conferences and championships.
Days leading up to graduation from high school, Elvie enlisted in the US Army. Upon completion of boot camp Elvie was stationed in Fort Benning, Georgia where he trained in telephone communications. Elvie served 2 different tours in Korea. He was honorably discharged in 1981.
He returned home to Baltimore where he was employed as store manager at Curley's Convenience Store and where he met his loving wife, Wanda. Shortly after, he took on employment with his brother Mark at the Hyatt Regency in the Inner Harbor of Baltimore where he served as a banquet server. Upon relocating to South Carolina, Elvie was employed with Maytag and McLeod Regional Hospital. He was also employed with Snappy Car Wash where he was affectionately given the name "Ole School." Elvie, was loved by all of those who worked with him.
He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 33 years, Wanda E. Harris; two daughters, Courtney Harris of Florence, SC and Alexis Harris of Baltimore, MD; two granddaughters, Kennedi and Aubrielle Harris of Florence, SC; two sisters, Karen (Kirk) Vincent and Cheryl (Gregg) Smith all of Baltimore, MD; three sisters-in-law, Sheila Williams, Jackie Nelson and Deborah (Troy) Brailey all of Timmonsville, SC; one brother in law Wendell (Thersia) Ervin of Laurel, MD; two honorary brothers, Clarence Round and Travis Rubin; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family is receiving friends at 1414 Willow Trace Drive, Apt. F Florence.
