George W. Mason entered eternal rest on Thursday, November 20, 2025, at McLeod Hospice House. He was born on May 25, 1953, to the late Lemuel Mason, Sr. and Mary Nettles Mason.
George graduated from West Florence High School in 1972. After completing his education, he joined the United States Army, where he served his country faithfully for 23 years of active duty and Reserve service, retiring with the rank of Staff Sergeant (SSG). During his working career, George was employed with La-Z-Boy, Merita Bakery, and the South Carolina Department of Transportation, from which he later retired. George accepted the Lord as his Savior at a young age. He was baptized and joined Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church, where he faithfully served on the Usher Board and in the Brotherhood Ministry.
He was preceded in death by two children, Melissa Askins and Andrew Askins; and six siblings: Samuel Mason, Sr., Mamie Cannon Webster, Birdie Mason, John Reginald Mason, Lemuel Mason, Jr., and Betty Williams.
Left to cherish his precious memories are his devoted wife of 38 years, Bessie Askins Mason; five children: Angel Renee Bass, Joy (Allen) McGill, Natissa (Bryant) Oliver, Nicholas Rashawn Askins, and Gabrielle Askins-Jenkins; three grandchildren: Nyzheir Rayshawn Askins, Brianna Andrea Oliver, and Michael McCoy; seven siblings: Hattie Wells of Bronx, NY; Billy (Barbara) Pettigrew of Hartford, CT; James Mason; Willie (Johnnie Mae) Mason; Gloria Mason Muldrow; Theresa Mason; and Terri Staggers, all of Florence, SC; two brothers-in-law, Willie Askins, Jr. and Henry Askins, both of Florence, SC; two sisters-in-law, Ellen Davis and Gladys Scipio of Florence, SC; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, church family, and friends.
The family is receiving friends at 1904 McNeil Drive, Florence.
