The Life and Legacy of Herman McClain
August 1, 1955 – September 7, 2026
“For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand; I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.” 2 Timothy 4:6–7
His Life
Herman McClain was born on August 1, 1955, in Lamar, South Carolina, to the late Leroy McClain Sr. and Christine Swinton McClain. He was educated in the public schools of Darlington County and later graduated from Cornerstone Christian Correspondence School in Townsend, Georgia.
On September 7, 2026, at the age of 71, Herman peacefully answered the Master’s call and transitioned from his earthly home in Florence, South Carolina, to eternal rest.
His Faith
Herman was a God-fearing, born-again Christian who loved the Lord and remained grounded in his faith. He was baptized and became an active member of Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church, where he faithfully served as a dedicated member of the Trustee Ministry.
His faith was reflected not only through his service to the church but also through the way he lived his life—with humility, dedication, kindness, and love for his family.
His Work
Herman believed in the value of an honest day’s work and was known for his exceptional work ethic. As a young man, he worked in manufacturing at Reaves Brothers in Bishopville, South Carolina.
After relocating to Florence, he continued his working career with Wallace Pork Skins, Merita Bakery, Pet Dairy, and Koppers of Florence. Herman was dependable and hardworking, always giving more than was expected of him. If he was scheduled to begin work at 8:00 a.m., Herman was often there by 6:00 a.m., ready to begin his day.
His commitment to hard work was one of the many qualities that defined the man he was.
His Love
In 2002, Herman married the love of his life, Willie Mae Greene-McClain. Their union was blessed with 24 wonderful years of marriage. Together, they created a home filled with love, laughter, patience, and unwavering support.
Herman was a steadfast, patient, kind, and devoted husband. Through every season of life, Herman and Willie Mae stood together, demonstrating the meaning of love, commitment, and companionship.
He was also a proud and loving father and grandfather who deeply valued his family.
His Joy
Herman enjoyed life and especially loved spending time outdoors. He had a passion for old cars and trucks and enjoyed riding motorcycles, pressure washing, painting, and playing pool. Those who knew Herman knew he could handle a pool stick and was always ready for a good game.
Whether working with his hands, enjoying the outdoors, or simply spending time with the people he loved, Herman found joy in life’s simple blessings.
His Legacy
Herman was preceded in death by his parents, Leroy McClain Sr. and Christine Swinton McClain; his brothers, Levern McClain and Ozell McClain; and his oldest grandson, Jaquavius McClain.
He leaves to cherish his loving memory his devoted wife of 24 years, Willie Mae Greene-McClain; his four children, Latogsha “Sherry” Damon-McClain, Maurice Simon, Tony Harris, and Shonda (Stevie) Harris-McCoy; his stepchildren, Dr. Jacquetta Mace-Chatman and Kellye Mace; 9 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and three step-grandchildren.
He also leaves a host of extended family members, church family, friends, and loved ones who will forever treasure the memories they shared with him.
Herman’s earthly journey has come to an end, but his legacy of faith, family, love, dedication, and hard work will live on through the lives of those he loved.
He fought a good fight. He finished his course. He kept the faith.
Well done, Herman. Take your rest. Your work on this side is complete, and your memory will forever remain in our hearts.
