Obituary

Deacon Julius Fowler was born on April 4, 1945, to the late Joseph Fowler Sr. and Zola Mae Teel-Fowler. He peacefully departed this earthly life on April 11, 2025, at MUSC Hospital in Florence, South Carolina.

Julius attended J.W. Holley High School, where he discovered his passion for carpentry through the National FFA Organization (Future Farmers of America), guided by his favorite teacher, Mr. Saddler. He graduated in 1964 with a solid foundation in carpentry already established.

Following graduation, Julius moved to New Jersey to further pursue his trade, studying carpentry at Mercer County College. During this time, he met and married the love of his life, Melissa Freeman. Their union lasted 56 wonderful years, and together they made New Jersey their home for over 45 years.

Julius had a long and dedicated career as a lead carpenter at Princeton University, where he worked for 41 years. In addition to his full-time job, Julius generously offered his talents to family, friends, and community members—often working weekends due to high demand for his exceptional craftsmanship. One of his greatest joys was doing carpentry work for churches and witnessing the beauty of the finished work.

In 1999, Julius joined Burlington Seventh-day Adventist Church, where he served faithfully as a Deacon. Upon retiring in 2016, he and Melissa relocated to Effingham, South Carolina, and became members of Shekinah Glory Seventh-day Adventist Church in Florence, where he continued his service as a devoted Deacon.

Julius was preceded in death by his parents and siblings: Tommy Lee Fowler, Ola Mae Fowler, Matthew Fowler, Macon Fowler, Mittie Fowler, Mary Lois Bibbs, Weldon Fowler, and Joseph Fowler.

He leaves behind a legacy of love and dedication, cherished by his beloved wife, Melissa Fowler; daughter, Nina R. Fowler; son, Julian A. Fowler; and two grandchildren: Dashay (Myrtle) Swint and Indigo Fowler.

Also mourning his passing are his sisters: Katie Watson of Lawrenceville, NJ; Flossie Lee Hill of Sylvester, GA; Minister Vera (Rev. Robert) Spears of Ashburn, GA; Glorestine (Harold) Williams; and Lillie Bell (William) Singleton of Walterboro, SC. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Ernest Freeman of Florence, SC; and sisters-in-law: Pecola Fowler, Vivian Fowler of Atlanta, GA, Ida Mae Fowler of Lawrenceville, NJ, and Mattie Bell of Albany, GA. He will be fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews, and close friends—especially Morris Roberts and John Carter.
