Mrs. Mattie Mae Anderson was born on May 7, 1954 in Rome, South Carolina to the late Moses Raymond Echol and Virginia Starr Echol. On Tuesday, May 26, 2026 she departed this life. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Larry Donell Anderson, her daughter Miya Mae Anderson, her great grandson Xzavien Ingram, one sister Geneva Grant, two brothers Roy Lee Echols, Daniel Lee Echols, and her favorite neighbor Carolyn Johnson. Left to cherish her perfect legacy; two sons Reggie and Jarrel Anderson. One sister Annie Ishmell and a brother Moses Lee Echols. One granddaughter, Shamiya Ingram (Dequan), one grandson, Keola Anderson and a great- granddaughter Leilani Ingram. Eight aunts Jessie Harlet, Laura Thompson, Hester Mae Echols, Romell Fleming, Emma Joe (Sammie) Kelley, Amelia (Curtis) Catoe, and Rosa Starr of Florence, South Carolina. Three sisters-in-law Mae Wilson Of Charlotte, North Carolina, Helen Nelson, and Belva Hunter of Florence South Carolina. Four brothers-in-law Johnny (Dorothy) Holmes of Darlington South Carolina, Arthur Holmes, Charles and David White of Florence, South Carolina. In addition to a host of nephews, nieces, and friends. Two special aunts Annie Ray and Sarah Starr of Florence, South Carolina. A few very special friends Vance Brooks, Josephine Vanderhall, Betty Perkins, Alice Fleming and Loistine Hunter of Florence, South Carolina. Two special cousins Ernestine Ashley and Joann Brown. One special God Daughter Paulette Echols. Two daughters-in-law, Katherine Kahele of Murrieta, California and Tammy Keith of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. One special son Chris (Dionne) Ross of Georgia. She graduated class of 1972 from McClenaghan High School. For many years she was employed at Pee Dee Mental Retardation Center. During her youth she was baptized at Elizabeth Baptist where she served on the usher board. An athlete at heart is what she’d call herself. She was well known for locking down third base on the softball field. Her competitive spirit, quick reflexes and love for the game earned her the respect she deserved from her teammates while still being able to instill fear in her opponents. When she wasn’t on the diamond you could find her with a fishing pole in her hand enjoying the peace of the creek and thrills of the catch. Above are all the accolades that made Mattie Mae a spirited, bright, and wonderful woman, but it wasn't until she had her own family where she truly blossomed into who God created her to be. She cherished everyone who she came in contact with and a lot of friends truly became family, but she loved her sisters and brothers. The deep bond and endless laughter, the never ending memories will always be amongst her greatest treasures. She was also able to extend her legacy beyond her own children, she then went on to love, raise, and laugh with her two grandchildren, who eventually gave her a great-granddaughter! It goes without saying but, Mattie was a devoted and fiercely loving mother to her two sons Reggie and Jarrel. Everyone who knew her could tell you that her boys were the absolute center of her world. She was always the biggest supporter, while always being the loudest. Not to mention the constant guiding light she was for them. Everything they are is because of her and there's no greater blessing than to experience her love. Mattie Mae Anderson will be deeply missed and forever remembered by her sons, grandchildren, siblings, extended family and many friends who became family over the years. She left us all with a hole that can never be filled, but that was always the point. To hold space for those we love and remember all the lessons and love that was poured into us for all of these years.
