Wilbur Lee Durant "Dukes" McElveen, the daughter of the late Harry Durant, Sr. and Francina Charles Durant, was born on March 29, 1940, in Florence, SC. She was the fifth born of seven children. Wilbur (affectionately known as "Dukes") entered into eternal rest on February 2, 2024.
Wilbur received her formal education in the public schools of Florence County, graduating in 1959 from Wilson High School. After graduation, she worked at Electro Motive and later became a homemaker and beautician.
As a member of St. Beulah Missionary Baptist Church, she accepted Christ as a child and had a deep love for God. Wilbur was actively involved in the St. Beulah ministry of the Deaconess Board as the president until her health declined. She was also a member of the Sr. Missionary, Sr. Club, and Sunday School.
Wilbur married her sweetheart Jack E. McElveen and was married 63 years. Together they raised one son, Jack McElveen, Jr. and three daughters, Debra Faison, Barbara Denise McElveen Williams and Harriett Ann McElveen.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Harry Durant, Jr.; three sisters, Jessie B. Frazier, Cornelia Gainey, and Clara B. Davis; one son, Jack McElveen, Jr.; and two daughters, Barbara M. Williams, and Harriett A. McElveen.
In eternal remembrance, left to cherish the precious legacy: her husband, Jack E. McElveen of the home; one daughter, Debra (Jesse) Faison of Florence, SC; one brother, Frank (Barbara) Durant of Meriden, CT; one sister, Martha Ann Harley of Florence, SC; one grandson, Robert (Rosedany) Williams of the home; four granddaughters, Jenelle McElveen of Columbia, SC, Jeka (Tomeka) Austin, Jessica (Leon) Wilson, and Robin (Shiquita) Williams all of Florence, SC; seven great grandchildren, Javion Smith, Janai Smith, Jaiden Smith, Gabrielle Richard, Kaiden Faison, Kyndall Wilson, and Sararose Williams; a goddaughter, Sharon Davis McCall; a host of nieces, nephews, and other relative and friends.
